Biography

Over the past 15 years Monteith McCollum has completed a number of films and soundwork.  His first feature film "Hybrid" (2001) garnered eleven festival awards including the Fipresci Award at Amsterdam Documentary Festival. Later that year Monteith was also awarded the New York Foundation for the Arts Prize and a Rockefeller Fellowship. "Milk in the Land" Monteith McCollum's second feature length documentary was a collaboration with his partner Ariana Gerstein. This feature completed in 2006 received funding through the NEA as part of the Creative Media Arts Fellowship program. Monteith's most recent feature length film "A Different Path" premiered at South by Southwest in 2010. While continuing to make films Monteith has also been consistently composing unique sound works for films along the way, this includes work for his films as well as other filmmakers.  Selections from his Hybrid soundtrack have been played on WNYC in New York and is included on the NYFA Current Fellow CD compilation curated and put together in 2009. His most recent "Different Path"  sound compositions are available through the Urban Meadow label. Monteith McCollum teaches film and video production at the Cinema Department, Binghamton University.

The Dafilms portal presents all of the three parts of his famous documentary trilogy, including the latest film Position among the Stars. On the backdrop of the tension in Indonesian society, Helmrich’s camera follows the Sjamsuddin family living their daily lives of work and worries, mutual love and hatred.
