Biography

Born in 1988 in Prague, Czech Republic. Having graduated in history at Charles University in Prague and Sorbonne in Paris, she now studies documentary film under Helena Trestikova at FAMU, Prague. Her main interests lie at the border between documentary and fiction, a border that she trangresses frequently in her work. She focuses on human stories and their peculiar poetic microworlds. Her films include Džihád masem, Lovci a sběrači, Loicu, vítej!, Hodina mezi psem a vlkem, Karel Lampa, Až zapadne Slunce.

Paradoxically, the son of an operetta star and a director of the Operetta of the National Theatre in Brno did not have enough time for theatre. From the age of fifteen, he made a living as a gay prostitute and the whirl of sex, drugs and disco music in the post-revolutionary years chewed him up and spitted him out with the HIV virus.

Gulîstan, Land of Roses Wins Prestigious Doc Alliance Selection Award at Locarno IFF

On Sunday, August 7, young director Zaynê Akyol became the 9th winner of the unique Doc Alliance Selection Award that is awarded since 2008 by the international Doc Alliance platform. The Kurdish director based in Canada received the award during an award ceremony at Locarno IFF. Along with the award, the filmmaker also received financial support of 5.000 euro for her future film.
