Biography

Born 1975 in Warsaw, Poland. Graduate of Film Academy of Ljubljana, Slovenia. Since 2001 she is active as writer, director and editor. Among her films are two feature films as well as several documentaries and short fiction films. Hanna Slak’s interest in film making range from the classical writer/director author cinema to short experimental and formal researches. In her fictional work Hanna Slak constructs intense characters based stories, where the narrative is propelled by the strong and clearly defined visual and audit style.

17 years after the Srebrenica genocide, people still gather once a year to bury their loved ones. For some it is an intimate event, for others a collective political gathering. Screens are used to protect: umbrellas not only protect against the burning midday sun, but also offer protection against the gaze of others, or a way to narrow one's own field of vision. Cameras are used in a similar way: helping to see, but also helping not to see too much, and to retain the distance.

Gulîstan, Land of Roses Wins Prestigious Doc Alliance Selection Award at Locarno IFF

On Sunday, August 7, young director Zaynê Akyol became the 9th winner of the unique Doc Alliance Selection Award that is awarded since 2008 by the international Doc Alliance platform. The Kurdish director based in Canada received the award during an award ceremony at Locarno IFF. Along with the award, the filmmaker also received financial support of 5.000 euro for her future film.
