Isabelle Tollenaere



Isabelle Tollenaere (born in Ghent, 1984) is an independent filmmaker. She studied documentary filmmaking at Sint-Lukas Brussels University College of Art and Design. Since then she has made 3 short films; her graduation film Still Life (2007), Trickland (2010) and Viva Paradis (2011). These short documentary films have been widely exhibited at international film festivals such as IDFA (NL), CPH:DOX (DK), FID Marseille (FR), EMAF (DE), EXiS (KR), New Horizons (PL) en Belo Horizonte International Film Festival (BR) amongst others. They were shown at art institutions like Centre Pompidou (FR), in projection or as video installation. Battles (2015) is Isabelle's first feature length film, it had its world premiere at International Film Festival Rotterdam (NL), where it won the Fipresci award.

Viva Paradis captures a moment in a land, Tunisia, in the midst of transformation; from an abandoned luxury hotel and the ruins of Carthage to the traces of the recent revolution. The fight has been fought, but how to proceed further now? Viva Paradis focuses on the moment after the journalists have left and the overflow of media images has stopped...





“My work has two strands: the first one deals with direct political images of violence, aggression and protest, mostly in Israeli-Palestinian context. It’s critique of news media, researching the complex, both realistic and surrealistic aspects of these images. The second strand of videos is more abstract and universal, dealing with cognitive, environmental and existential issues,” says the director about his works.
