10 Years of Discovering the Best Documentaries for You

Kino Kombat Online

Become a film warrior this week, holding a documentary camera as the strongest weapon in your hands! Join the Kino Kombat movement where victory comes through film images. From Monday, March 10 to Sunday, March 16, you can watch the selection of 5 films from the current programme of the 7th edition of One World Romania International Human Rights Documentary Film Festival for free!

Including 3 feature-length films, 1 mid-length film and 1 short film, the selection presents a wide scale of forms that the resistance against unequal social conditions can take. Screened at more than two dozen film festivals in 2013, Turkey’s MY CHILD follows the story of a parent group with an untraditional characteristic; they are the parents of children who are part of the LGBT community. Sharing their experience, the protagonists gradually gain self-confidence in their new role and eventually go out to the streets by their children’s side, joining the Istanbul Gay Pride. The moment of a public declaration of resistance is also captured in the short documentary ROMANIAN AUTUMN. In the course of 14 minutes, the documentary depicts the emotional situations of protest events held against mining plans in Romania’s goldmines.

Protest as the main motif is also present in the feature-length film CROP. Revisiting the Egyptian revolution of 2011 known as the “Lotus Revolution”, it retells the story of the greatest surge of resistance in the modern history of Egypt from a completely unique perspective; that of a photo journalist who never made it to the public battlefield due to his hospitalization. An ironic chain of small events of resistance and micro stories of those struggling for/against the construction of a highway unfolds in Ivo Bystřičan’s BYEWAY. The project manager, a civil activist and a married couple living near the construction site seem to be bound to the kilometres of asphalt forever. Struggles long past, almost forgotten by the youngest generation, are recalled in the selection’s last film THE SHOVEL IS TOO SMALL. How does the generation of Serbian teenagers perceive the communist past and propaganda? Watch the process called “Yugo-nostalgia” live!

Do you like the idea of Kino Kombat? Let’s meet in front of the streaming screens in the week from March 10 to 16 at DAFilms.com!

Films for the event

CROP (Orig.) / 2013 / Egypt, Germany / 47 min

Crop is an absorbing account of the Egyptian revolution of 2011 – one that includes no images of the popular uprising itself. Filmed entirely within the offices of Al-Ahram, the country’s largest state-run newspaper, the film is a series of carefully composed tableaux that expose the institution’s functioning and the former regime’s strict control over information.

Dál nic (Orig.) / 2014 / Czech Republic / 72 min

Seven years on, builders are unable to complete the last few kilometres of the D8 motorway that leads through the protected area of the Bohemian Uplands to Germany. The construction is blocked by a series of actions by the Children of the Earth civic association, which draws attention to illegality surrounding the course of the project. But locals see the situation differently...

“My work has two strands: the first one deals with direct political images of violence, aggression and protest, mostly in Israeli-Palestinian context. It’s critique of news media, researching the complex, both realistic and surrealistic aspects of these images. The second strand of videos is more abstract and universal, dealing with cognitive, environmental and existential issues,” says the director about his works.
