The Romanian film METROBRANDING has earned a nomination for Doc Alliance Selection Award in 2010. Thanks to the nomination, the film by young duo of directors Ana Vlad and Adrian Voicu has travelled to Doc Alliance festival partners, such as Visions du Réel Nyon in Switzerland, DOK Leipzig in Germany, Jihlava IDFF in the Czech Republic and CPH:DOX in Denmark. Carrying the subtitle A Love Story Between Men and Objects, the observational documentary provides a retrospective reflection of the workings of the Romanian socialist market, which has been dominated by six national products designed for the household and for personal use in the times of the communist normalization. In the eyes of Romanian citizens, an ordinary sewing machine, a bed mattress, a bicycle or a motorcycle have become a symbol of live quality and a tool of building one’s own identity inside a society sealed from the outside world.
The young directors reveal the stories of the individual products which have accumulated hundreds of personal accounts of Romanians, who have longed for them, used them, produced them and promoted them. On the basis of period sources and accounts of the protagonists, we can see to what degree the objects of everyday use represent a significant tool of constructing our future (in the form of desire), present (in the form of the social status) and past (in the form of memories).
