For many years, RICHARD DINDO has been labelled as the key figure of Swiss documentary. His significance for both local and European documentary cinema has been proved by the award for lifelong contribution PRIX MAÎTRE DU RÉEL he has received at the 45th edition of the festival. His demanding cinematic probes circle the theme of memory of the individual, the collective and historical events. On the basis of testimonies rendered by means of texts and words, Dindo composes complex film images through which both famous European personalities and little known heroes of Swiss history talk to the viewers.
In his films ARTHUR RIMBAUD: UNE BIOGRAPHIE; ERNESTO "CHE" GUEVARA, LE JOURNAL DE BOLIVIE and GENET À CHATILA, the director is searching for the real face of the cursed poet Arthur Rimbaud, following the course of the Cuban Revolution through “Che“ Guevara’s diaries, and heading to the border of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict accompanied by writer Jean Genet. The three biographical films are complemented by films dealing with the events of 20th century Swiss history. The documentary DANI, MICHI, RENATO & MAX recalls the revolutionary unrest of 1980 and 1981 in Zurich while L´EXÉCUTION DU TRAÎTRE À LA PATRIE ERNST S. revisits the story of a soldier; a WWII traitor. Belgian director PIERRE-YVES VANDEWEERD focuses on the African continent in the long term. Combining a poetic film language and the methods of anthropological research in an original way, he reveals the specific life of “third world” inhabitants. His works, too, have attracted the attention of Visions du Réel, which organized a retrospective of his films and awarded his latest film LES TOURMENTES a Special Mention. The three films included in the online selection CLOSED DISTRICT, LE CERCLE DES NOYÉS and FARAWAY ROOTS use ordinary and dreamy stories to draw a unique image of Africa torn by religious and political conflicts. The films have English subtitles.
