Focused on Football!

Focused_on_Football_1

Do you think the world of film and art is miles apart from everyday life? See for yourself that this is not so and watch seven exceptional comic, experimental and archive documentaries to explore the unique sports and social phenomenon of football! This phenomenon won’t leave anybody cold, be they die-hard fans or filmmakers from across the globe. From Monday, June 16 to Sunday, June 22, you can be a fan of both documentary and football at the field of DAFilms.com!

In the course of his football career of more than three decades, Zinedine Zidane has become a world legend whose name resonates with a global force. The fascination with his talent as well as his phenomenal international fame has struck a star of the art world that is just as powerful and renowned; Scotch multimedia artist Douglas Gordon. Gordon, who was awarded the prestigious Turner Prize in 1996 and who has presented his works oscillating between film, photography and sound in the form of forceful installations at global galleries and international exhibitions, has introduced Zidane in a yet unseen form. During a football match of Real Madrid in 2005, he has aimed 17 synchronized cameras at the football player, creating the unique experimental image ZIDANE: A 21ST CENTURY PORTRAIT. A substantial component of the film is represented by the music score by the Scottish band Mogwai; Gordon personally insisted on the band‘s participation.

Director Pavel Abrahám and screenwriter Tomáš Bojar have allowed their documentary TWO NIL full play within a comic subtext that can make you laugh while giving you food for thought. In the Czech football microcosm, the match of Prague’s age-old rivals, the Sparta and Slavia teams, represents the main event of the season. However, who are the people who watch every move of their favourite players in the green field each year? Why do they go to see the matches at all? Young players from the squirt team, wives of rich businessmen, sports commentators, hard-core fans, match organizers and stadium security guards; all of them have their reasons why they met at the football stands that day and why they were filmed by one of the 22 film cameras.

A relaxed narrative atmosphere is also present in VILLAGE B. by Filip Remunda, introducing the ordinary Czech village of Blšany which seems completely uninteresting at first glance. However, every two weeks, it comes alive with football euphoria, as - surprise, surprise! - the village of Blšany plays the Extra League. Portuguese filmmaker Catarina Mourão shows what football means to a world remote from sports luxury. Her documentary ON EDGE presents football as a dream factory producing visions of better tomorrows, making the harsh life in poor Portugal more bearable. A powerful personal story related to the world of football is also told in the Polish mid-length film FOOTBALL FATHER. In the film, a blind father, a sports massage therapist, initiates his young son, who is slowly losing his sight, too, to the mysteries of football fandom.

How has the world of football transformed into its current form defined by media and economy? Treat yourself to a return to the beginnings of football history and watch a football tournament from 1914. The FOOTBALL TOURNAMENT “FOR A SILVER CUP“ has just begun! You can spend the minutes of advertisement breaks between the matches by watching the short experimental story CAN AND SLIPPERS by Filipino artist Khavn De La Cruz.
