10 Years of Discovering the Best Documentaries for You

Romanian Documentaries No Longer Stand in the Corner!

Off_the_beaten_track

It is not a secret anymore that Eastern Europe is becoming a more and more interesting region for documentary viewers. Romania, too, has slowly but surely found its place on the map of world documentary. In cooperation with Astra Film Festival, we have selected 4 most successful Romanian documentaries of the past years screened at world festivals. Watch the best of contemporary Romanian documentary from October 6 to 12 at DAFilms.com for free!

What do the selected documentaries have in common? They were screened at the most prestigious international festivals such as IDFA and the documentary feast in Rotterdam, they met with a good response “over the big pond” and, last but not least, they were also screened at Romania’s leading Astra Film Festival. Since 1993, the festival has represented the flagship of Romanian documentary in the international waters of cinema. How did the festival manage to sail through them in its history of more than 20 years? Watch in a short film!

If you only have a short while to watch the Romanian selection, do not miss the poetic film OFF THE BEATEN TRACK screened at Rotterdam IFF in 2011. Director Dieter Auner has captured the slowly disappearing male world of Romanian shepherds who take care of their herds, living their country lives in a strictly traditional way in the heart of the mountains of Transylvania. How long will it take until their tranquil daily routine gets absorbed by the globalized European market?

Do you believe in true love or do you consider it a romantic anachronism? The protagonist of NOOSFERA, a respectable university professor of sociology, will try to convince you that real genuine love still exists; and what is more, it has its indispensable place in modern society. Unfortunately, his personal life, caught up in a strange triangle between his wife and ex-wife, has not yet proved these expert theories.

The theme of strong faith also dominates the documentary TEODORA SINNER, with the main protagonist achieving her life’s aim; marriage; after 11 years. However, he whom she gives herself fully is not just any man; it is Christ himself. The aspect of faith is also present in the last film of the selection THE CURSE OF THE HEDGEHOG. A group of Romanian Roma living in extreme poverty take a journey to the city to make a living for the next year. Their way of live, however, is not primarily a result of the exclusive functioning of the society but is rather based on their philosophy, with orthodox Christianity combined with mythology playing a crucial role.

Do not let Romanian documentary stand in the corner and invite it to your screens in the week from October 6 to 12, 2014 for free!
