The 26th edition of FID Marseille held on the shore of the French port and packed with arthouse cinema has come to a successful close. The third edition of the FIDCampus workshop for the most talented film students, carefully selected by the Marseilles festival team since 2013, has just waved goodbye to viewers and film professionals as well. This year, too, twelve young filmmakers met in the week from June 29 to July 7 to learn more about the world of film festivals and the possibilities of financial support as well as to get advice and inspiration from world-known directors and producers. The students selected for the workshop come from the renowned French art schools in Paris, Toulouse, Arles, Marseille and Aubagne while others represent non-European countries such as Morocco, Tunisia, Lebanon, Egypt and Algeria.
The selection of 14 student films presents the participants from all the three previous editions. The initial year 2013 is represented for instance by young Tunisian filmmaker Sami Belhaj whose black-and-white film KHERTA uses the metaphor of the language and life of sailors to reflect on the confined nature of his native country in space and time. Director Camille Pernin, a former student from Toulouse, too, introduced her short fiction film INTERVALLE during the first edition of the workshop. Her short intimate silent film captures the careful bonding of two young men. The more and more relevant theme of the departure from the countries in the Near East was addressed in the short film DEPARTURES by Beirut-based student Wissam Tanios in the same year.
Among the group of talents selected in 2014, the film to attract the most attention is AT LEAST WE'VE MET by twenty-seven-year-old Serbian student Marko Grba Singh, revealing fragments from the life of a Belgrade homeless man. The filmmaker not only participated in the prestigious FIDCampus platform but also successfully presented his film in premiere at the Swiss Doc Alliance festival Visions du Réel and later at more than 40 film festivals. Singh revisited the screening halls of FID Marseille in 2015 with his feature-length film ABDUL & HAMZA screened in international competition. The film that received a world premiere and a positive response there also won a special mention in the category of film debuts.
The wide range of genres and narrative approaches is proved by each of the presented films. In his thirty-minute film, the local student and participant of the 2014 workshop Julian Ballester observes the streets of Marseille, telling the story of transsexual prostitutes from CURIOL STREET whose lives change intensively along with the changing character of that part of the city. Tunisian student Dhia Jerbi has employed an approach including the aspects of performance and intervention, dealing with the unexpected change of the content of his film and the departure of the protagonist of his short film MARHOUJA. The participant of the most recent third edition, French filmmaker Annabelle Amoros from Arles, has found inspiration in the world of literature, exploring the limits of human imagination and testing the power of legends and myths in her film HUNTER’S MOON.
