10 Years of Discovering the Best Documentaries for You

Animation + Documentary. We Present a Selection from DOK Leipzig

From October 19 to November 1, you can watch films combining documentary and animation at DAFilms.com. The special offer is based on the programme of DOK Leipzig festival.

Watch films such as Still Born (winner of the Golden Dove award for the best animated film at DOK Leipzig 2014) and other films oscillating between an intimate and political message in a unique animated form: Counting Days and Years, Broken Branches, Amerykanka. All included, The Predicate and the Poppy, T’s World: The Over-identification of Terry Thompson.

You will find the complete programme of this year’s DOK Leipzig, which presents animated documentaries this year as well, here. The festival starts already on October 26!

Still Born is, in the words of its makers, an animated documentary about loss, anger and sorrow. A cardiac malformation left the soon-to-be parents with a terrible choice. Variety magazine has called Still Born a milestone of modern animation and praised it in a review for the personal tone of its narrative as well as for its inspiration by Jan Švankmajer and Bill Plympton. The film has been awarded by the jury of DOK Leipzig and other festivals.

Ramon Bloomberg‘s 30-minute film T’s World: The Over-identification of Terry Thompson is an animated re-enactment of a case of an American who bred wild animals (56 tigers, wolves, bears and lions!). One day, he released them and fed them his own body. The film combines various types of images, formally alluding both to ancient Greek tragedies and Playstation aesthetics.

Five young French teachers resolved to persevere and not leave a problematic school at the outskirts of Paris. Five years later, they describe their experience, daily routine, dreams and results in The Predicate and the Poppy.

Counting Days and Years tells about children who believe that they are alone with their problems. Three children have confided their personal stories and thoughts to the filmmakers. Based on these stories, the imaginative film lets the viewers look into the children’s extraordinary worlds.

Broken Branches is an Israeli animated documentary about Michal Rechter who left her family in Poland on the eve of the Second World War and travelled to Israel. At the age of 92, she told her story to director Ayala Sharot.

The Belarussian film Amerykanka. All included introduces the life of Alyaksandr Fyaduta, journalist, author and prisoner of the Belarussian regime. The former adviser of president Lukashenko joined the Belarussian opposition and ended up in jail. Treading a thin line between tragedy and comedy, the animated film reveals the most guarded place of totalitarian Belarus; Amerykanka being the notorious KGB headquarters in Minsk.

Until November 1, you can watch these films at DAFilms.com completely for free.
