Homeland (Iraq Year Zero) by Abbas Fahdel has won the Doc Alliance Selection Award. The winning film is composed of two parts – the first was shot before the US army’s invasion of Iraq while the second part captures the post-war events – providing an essential report on the turning point in the country’s development. Instead of shorthand news features on the events in Iraq, it brings an impressive portrayal of life in the country. Director Fahdel received the award at the Locarno film festival.

A patient camera chronicles the Transylvanian village of Viscri slowly extricating itself from poverty typical to the outskirts of the European union in an original way: by the means of sock making. The trade continues a centuries-old handicraft tradition rejuvenated by the conditions of global export. This is the hope of a German businessman who has turned a part of the village where cows cross muddy streets into a large manufacture. In a relaxed way, the directors capture the lives of the people in harmony with the serene beauty of the surrounding landscape to depict its change in details of everyday scenes.
