“I left Slovakia when I was twenty. Ever since then I was coming back essentially as a foreigner. I was a bit frightened, when I received the invitation, as I was wondering what I could come up with for the film. Then I remembered how much fun I had when my native Kežmarok awarded me the Honorary Citizenship and I realised that it could be turned to a satire. Because I was actually expelled from Kežmarok. I was a terrible student, an awful fighter. Moreover I had some strange drive to keep entertaining the entire group at school. My school report on conduct was poor, I was getting Bc and Cs for behaviour. That is why I was surprised and even amused when my native city honoured me years later the way it did. Kežmarok has changed a lot across the decades I used to visit it, and I like it very much. My great-grandparents were born there, as were my grandparents, parents; one of my two brothers still lives there. I consider Kežmarok to be my native city and coming back was like returning home. Even the pharmacy that is in the film is the one in which I used run as a boy and where my father worked as a pharmacist.”

What is “Slovakia”? How to explain the notion of “Slovakia” of the past 20 years to an unknown stranger, a visitor from another planet? What is the genetic makeup or the software for “Slovakia”? How to use it? How does it change?

Slovakia 2.0 is a film about twenty years of independent Slovakia as seen from the perspective of ten film directors. It is composed of ten 10-minute films of different genres ranging from drama, through animation and documentaries, to experimental film. The ten recognised film directors who offer an answer to what is Slovakia include a wide range of generations, views and genres, namely Juraj Herz, Martin Šulík, Peter Kerekes, Zuzana Liová, Mišo Suchý, Ondrej Rudavský, Iveta Grófová, Peter Krištúfek, Viera Čákanyová, and Miro Jelok.

The result is unique artistic reflection of contemporary history of Slovakia and, equally, a reflection of Slovak cinematography in its different forms.
