Maggie in Wonderland was granted the Doc Alliance Selection award tonight at DOK Leipzig’s closing ceremony by an external jury of European film professionals that included Esther van Messel, Nino Kirtadzé and Krzysztof Kopczynski. The film, directed by Ester Martin Bergsmark, Mark Hammarberg, Beatrice "Maggie" Andersson, was one of five films eligible for the award. The documentaries were selected at the beginning of this year and toured each of the Doc Alliance partner festivals, beginning with VISIONS DU REEL Nyon and ending with CPH:DOX Copenhagen.
The film follows Kenyan-born Maggie, who lives on the fifteenth floor of an apartment building in a suburb of the Swedish city of Malmö. With absurdist humour and bittersweet moments, Maggie’s tiny world and all its eccentricities explore the realities of social isolation.
The 2010 Doc Alliance selection will be announced in February of next year.
