Close to 200 films are shown within this year’s Special Programmes at DOK Leipzig. The Official Selection with its six film competition sections and the International Programme comprise around 150 more current films. A total of about 350 films can be seen during the festival week from October 26 to November 1.

Thematically, the leitmotif for this year “Borders and Identities” threads its way across many of Special programmes. On the occasion of the 25th anniversary of German reunification, the Retrospective with its wealth of tradition is going to be addressing the new, post-1990 borders in Europe. The Country Focus sheds light on the booming documentary film landscape in South Korea – a nation in which reunification seems inconceivable at the present time. The honours at this year’s homage are going to John Smith from England. The works of this British filmmaker and video artist traverse the perimeter of what’s termed ‘documentary’ and are frequently labelled ‘experimental comedies’. The Special Programme Animated Africa: Sub-Saharan Animations ranges from fables to topics revolving around emancipation. Another Special Programme is dedicated to adolescent protagonists for the first time. Bodycheck deals with the limits and possibilities of one’s own body.

Discuss with Julian Assange and Pussy Riot’s Masha at Jihlava IDFF!

For five years, the Inspiration Forum of Jihlava IDFF has been inviting exceptional, remarkable and controversial personalities to the Czech Republic, bringing them together with the general public as well as with Czech and international documentary filmmakers. The guests of this year’s Inspiration Forum include former member of Pussy Riot Masha (Maria Alyokhina) and founder of WikiLeaks Julian Assange. On the backdrop of remarkable documentary films from across the world, Jihlava IDFF wants to spark a debate and reflection on the crucial questions of today and present the themes that affect the world events from an unexpected or very personal perspective. The Inspiration Forum is curated by director and producer Filip Remunda.

As a remarkable novelty of this year, the number of screening halls will be increased from six to seven. The hall of Dělnický dům on Žižkova Street in Jihlava will expand the festival’s capacity by more than 400 seats. For the first time in the festival’s history, some of the festival screenings will be held outside Jihlava – in Třešť.
