DOCUART: Documentary Camera in the Hands of Visual Artists

More than a hundred years after the birth of the film strip, there is no doubt that the film camera can speak in different ways. The history of film and documentary is interlaced with the turning points of the rises and falls of new technological and creative processes. However, within this unceasing transformation, is it possible to track down the characteristic features of periods and films when visual artists have grabbed the film camera?

More than a hundred years after the birth of the film strip, there is no doubt that the film camera can speak in different ways. The history of film and documentary is interlaced with the turning points of the rises and falls of new technological and creative processes. However, within this unceasing transformation, is it possible to track down the characteristic features of periods and films when visual artists have grabbed the film camera? What can visual artists render in a better or different way by means of film rather than by means of visual language? In the week from November 18 to November 24, you can watch 8 documentary films made by leading Czech and Slovak artists at DAFilms.com for free!

The films represent the documentary works by contemporary art groups as well as individuals, men and women, authors inclined towards the conceptual, media and social traditions of artistic expression. Some of the films capture the viewers right away by their content and narrative form within the genre of classic documentary film. Others, on the contrary, challenge the viewers to reflect on the contemporary forms of documentary film, shifting its borders beyond the cinematic space by means of experimentation and narrative shortcut. Rafani and Ztohoven art groups introduce their feature length debuts. The travelogue by multimedia artist Federico Díaz and the short family play by renowned Czech artist Kateřina Šedá represent rather unexpected excursions into the film medium. Films by Adéla Babanová and Daniel Pitín represent an art field with a rather blurred division line between video art and film project. Themes accentuating social issues are discussed by the politically engaged art of Vladimír Turnerand Tomáš Rafa.
