Since 2009, an international jury comprised of distributors, sales agents, directors and film critics meets each year to present the Silver Eye Award to the best film coming from the region of Central and Eastern Europe within three categories of short, mid-length and feature-length documentary. Through the Silver Eye Award, its founders of the East Silver documentary platform of the Institute of Documentary Film strive to fulfil their long-term principal goal; to develop, support and promote films by Central and East European filmmakers.

Besides the award nomination, the 4 selected films also share a common and critical perspective of the current social problems across the global society. The documentary [JAKARTA DISORDER](http://dafilms.com/film/8889-jakarta-disorder/( takes the viewers to a road movie through Indonesian slums, with two women, different yet strongly convinced that democracy is more than an empty word, pointing out the tragic situation of Jakarta’s poorest inhabitants. All that on the backdrop of the only second free presidential election. On the other side of the world, a rather frosty one, the story of a similarly chilling film ICELAND YEAR ZERO unfolds. The film revisits the year 2008 which has made a black mark in Iceland’s history, leaving a zero of bankruptcy on the nation’s promissory notes. Can the fall of the capitalist system bring new social values to the society? At first glance, A LETTER TO DAD is an intimate account of a son trying to reveal the real character of his late father; however, it, too aims at a reflection of the catalysts of social transformation. By means of photographs and archive footage from the 1970s, the film reveals the sinister nature of civil war as well as the force with which it fell upon the everyday lives of Yugoslavia’s inhabitants. Last but not least, the selection includes the 2013 winner of the award’s short film category; docu-drama PREVIOUS SCENE by Polish director Aleksandra Maciuszek.
