Czech Documentary Harvest 2013

The greatest Czech international film festival Karlovy Vary is round the corner. The spa colonnades are getting smartened up for the festival and the film fans are setting up lists of films they should definitely not miss according to the critics. However, before the most remarkable films of the new year appear on the screens of the festival screening halls, it might be worth it to look back on what the past year has brought to Czech documentary. What was the Czech documentary harvest carrying the stamp of 2013 like? Find out for free in the first two summer weeks at DAFilms.com!

Juicy yet with a bitter taste; such is the characteristic of the Czech documentary harvest of 2013. Strong social themes concerning politics, show business or life with a mental illness are presented with a slightly comic touch, yet without moralizing or mockery. Although the icing on the cake may taste a little bitter, you will definitely love our documentary menu!

SHOW! by talented young director Bohdan Bláhovec has made its mark in the history of Czech documentary as one of the most successful graduation films. Taking up the role of a detached observer, the filmmaker follows the workings of a girl music band, which is uncompromisingly controlled by the ambitious father of one of the child performers. The film has stirred a great media response and received several awards, including the Czech Film Critics‘ Award. The documentary BYEWAY, too, confronts the audiences with a controversial topic; that of the construction of a highway which has not been finished even after seven long years. Following three protagonists, including a construction engineer, an environmentalist and a local resident, director Ivo Bystřičan captures a sequence of tragicomic events caused primarily by the bureaucratic apparatus.

TREATING HISTORY by acclaimed filmmaker Vít Janeček looks back on recent Czech history. The director is searching for the legacy of the exceptionally heroic figure of doctor František Kriegel, the only representative of the Communist Party to publicly disagree with the occupation of Czechoslovakia in 1968. Are there such heroes in the Czech society today? Although he is not a hero of collective history, the protagonist of the documentary THE STORY OF MR LOVE is definitely unique. He suffers from schizophrenia, which, however, does not prevent him from making perfect use of modern communication tools or from a courageous search for the meaning of his existence. How are his questions and way of life accepted by others? Where is the division line between normality and abnormality?

Enjoy the first holiday weeks with the fruits of the Czech documentary harvest of 2013! SHOW!, BYEWAY, TREATING HISTORY, THE STORY OF MR LOVE and other Czech documentaries are served by DAFilms.com from June 30 to July 13 for free!
