An award-winning MAIDAN – exclusively and for free!

The first world online retrospective of director Sergei Loznitsa has reached its grand finale! After a two-week presentation of ten documentary films by the director, DAFilms.com gives you a chance to watch Loznitsa’s latest, currently discussed and award-winning film MAIDAN from Saturday, December 13 to Sunday, December 21 exclusively and for free!

The Ukrainian revolution, which started at the turn of the winter of the past year as a protest movement against the country’s former president Viktor Yanukovych, is captured in the film by means of long takes of crowd scenes fragmented by moments of immediate violence of the clashes between the police and the demonstrators filmed on a mobile phone.

Why did Loznitsa decide for this very director’s approach? “It is a popular movement, and what I wanted to show, the subject of my film, is the people. If I start singling out individual characters—just two, three, four, five characters—it would not be the story of the people anymore. It would just be individual characters …“ (Filmcomment, November, 2014)

The film which had a premiere during a special screening at Cannes IFF has already won several international awards. For instance, it received the Grand Prize at Romania’s Astra Film Festival; the most recent award comes from the 55th edition of the Italian Festivalu Dei Popoli held in the past few days in Milan.

Jorge Silva Melo: A Man Who Lives for Art

Meet the documentary works by Portuguese multi-genre artist Jorge Silva Melo who has combined his love for theatre, literary text and the film medium in his art career with a lightness that is typical of him. Enter a world where art and the creative essence of man play the main role. Watch a selection of two documentary films by the filmmaker under the baton of the Portuguese Doc Alliance festival Doclisboa in the week from December 15 to 21 for free!

A native of Lisbon, Jorge Silva Melo has made his mark in the modern history of several art disciplines while crisscrossing several European capitals on his life journey. He studied film in London; refined his theatre work in Berlin and Milan; spent a part of his career in Paris; and came back to his native Portugal in 1995. Here he founded the key theatre group Artistas Unidos which predetermined the direction of Portuguese theatre for several future years.

As Melo’s works straddle various art fields, including acting and writing, the creative urge and the creative process have become the key motifs of the documentary films signed by the filmmaker. This is why he focuses his camera on leading Portuguese, especially visual artists, exploring their life and work as a unique complex whole which reflects the current social events in a certain way.

An individual‘s personal relationship to social events is followed on an intimate scale by the documentary film António Sena – A Mão Esquiva paying homage to one of the key figures of Portuguese painting of the second half of the 20th century. This films is accompanied by the second author´s work A Felicidade.

Welcome to the documentary journey towards modern Portuguese art from Monday, December 15 to Sunday, December 21!
