Film Essays from the South

Extend your film holiday in the South of Europe by one more week! This time, film students of Portugal’s youngest generation will show you how diverse the results of the creative assignment “FILM ESSAY“ can be. From July 27 to August 2, you can explore the film studios of the prestigious art school Escola Superior de Artes e Design de Caldas da Rainha and the most interesting films born behind its doors for free.

Have you always wanted to know what film studies are like? Have you studied the subject yourselves and are you looking for a comparison? Use the unique opportunity to sit at a virtual desk of the** film department of the Upper School of Art and Design in the Portuguese city of Caldas da Rainha**. Besides numerous ceramic pottery workshops with a long tradition, the medium-sized city situated in Central Portugal near the shore of the Atlantic Ocean is also home to a large university campus dedicated to art studies. Future filmmakers are preparing for their artistic careers there along with visual artists, designers and theatre professionals.

Those charmed by the film medium can attend the school’s “Sound and Image” programme offering studies in the field of film and television, new media, film technology, editing, production and script editing. The complex preparation of young talents includes demanding and original tasks. We bring you the result of one such task in the genre of a “film essay”, which ranks among the trickiest ones for its generally wide scope, exclusively online.

The students were assigned to make their first film essay in March of this year. The aim was primarily to make a functional tool that will allow them to develop the overall structure as well as the details of their research for the final film works that will conclude their studies. The essays thus took up the role of “film notebooks” whose pages were covered by multi-coloured images inspired primarily by the film works by Alain Cavalier, the film “Scénario” by Jean-Luc Godard as well as the short documentary “Notes for a Film about India” by Pier Paolo Pasolini.

What forms can the narrative of a film essay take? What are all the things that film can talk about? Be surprised and inspired by five student films from July 27 to August 2, 2015 for free!
