Swiss Filmmaker Peter Liechti’s The Sound of Insects - Record of a Mummy was recently granted the ‘Documentary Award’ by the European Film Academy, in co-operation with the European culture channel ARTE.

Each year the European Film Academy honours an outstanding achievement in documentary. The Sound of Insects – one of the six Doc Alliance selections – was awarded by an international jury comprised of French/Georgian documentary filmmaker Nino Kirtadzé, Austrian producer and ORF editor Franz Grabner, and Russian documentary filmmaker Viktor Kossakovsky. As the jury stated, The Sound of Insects was awarded “for its skillful exploration of minimalist means to create an extraordinary visual story between life and death.”

The experimental The Sound of Insects is a viscerally hypnotic exploration into the final days of one anonymous man whose found-journal chronicles the disturbing details of his suicide through self-imposed starvation. Narrated by edgy Canadian doc-maker Peter Mettler, Liechti’s film surrealistically blends kaleidoscopic images of urbanism with ominous natural landscapes, reflecting the vacancy of a relinquishing soul on its departure from life.

The Sound of Insects - Record of a Mummy will be presented its award at the 22nd European Film Awards Ceremony on Saturday, 12 December, in Bochum, Germany. As part of the Doc Alliance Selection, The Sound of Insects is eligible for the ‘Doc Alliance Award,’ which will be presented in the end of October during DOK Leipzig festival.
