The film Day after the Long Night focuses on three women, Libuše Audrlická, a Czech, Barbara Müller, a Pole, and Inna Klimenková, a Ukrainian. These women were three out of a total of 13 million people who were employed as forced labour in the Third Reich during the Second World War. For the most part the work took the form of monotonous tasks in munitions factories or in agriculture production, usually in 12-hour shifts in difficult harsh weather and poor working conditions. These factors were made worse by the awareness that their work helped support the Nazi regime. Director Tomáš Kudrna focuses on these women's recollections of their life as labourers for a totalitarian system. He uses a large quantity of unique archive materials, family photographs and a disturbing musical score, composes a vivid portrait of the turbulent destinies of these three women whose lives were shaped by wartime events and forced labour in Nazi Germany.
