Abkhazia is a forgotten war-torn country close to Crimea-Ukraine. Perched on the shores of the Black Sea, the unrecognised splinter state used to be a beach getaway for Soviets; palatial hotels now sit in post-communist ruin. For Abkhazian Sports Minister Rafael, however, everything’s looking up. He’s hopeful that the mysterious Domino World Championship he’s organising will finally put his beloved motherland on the world’s radar.
While this is going on Rafael has to contend with the fact that locals won’t warm to his wife. Natasha is a proud Russian opera singer, who gave up her home and custody of her Russian daughter to take a chance on a new life. Local hostility toward his wife and the mounting troubles that begin to cloud Rafael’s ‘sport’ events, lead to a wobble in national pride and threaten to bring down Rafael’s vision of a bright future for Abkhazia.
