A folk musician recovering from an almost lethal car accident covers the song of a pop icon who just returned from the rehab by working an unknown small Romanian folk band’s motif into it that leads to the biggest hit in the past decade in Hungary.

Quimby is an alternative rock band popular on the Hungarian music scene since 1991. In 2003 they had to take a break when Tibor Kiss, their singer and songwriter went to rehab for over a year. After returning to the band he wrote one of their most emblematic song, Broken glass paradise, built on his experiences during the recovery. But it didn’t become a success right away, for that an other element was needed.

Years later a folk band, the Hungarian Csík Band decided to cover it and with that the song became more popular than anyone would have thought. János Csík formed his band in 1988 and today they are one of the most popular folk band in Hungary. But their way to the top was not an easy ride either: János Csík had an almost lethal car accident and it counts as a miracle that he was able to play music again. The key to their success is that they created a new style: they cover pop or rock songs using folk instruments and motifs. They reached nationwide success with the cover made on Broken glass paradise that was seen by more than 15 million people on youtube. Many people who don’t know the original version even think that it is based on an actual folk song. In one way they are not mistaken. The Csík Band worked a folk motif known in the Erdőszombattelke region in Transilvania, Romania into the song.
