In this poetic and warm-hearted rumination on mortality, loss and love, director Sonja Lindén profiles her father, Krister, a hermit who has lived a solitary existence on a remote island for the last 16 years. Krister's narration reveals his daily routine, which includes building a casket. His journal contains a set of detailed instructions for the care of his cabin and a pre-written obituary with only the date remaining blank. As Krister's motives become clear, so too does his eccentric, boyish humour and his somewhat iconoclastic sense of spirituality. (His list of last requests includes a demand that a sign reading "In the beginning, man created God" remain on his wall as long as the house is standing.) As we hear his daily affectionate phone calls to his wife, who lives in a nursing home, the film gradually takes on the character of its subject-intimate, passionate and wise with a grounded, earthy pragmatism. Beautifully composed and evocative of the natural world, this is a sweet and soulful portrait of an independent spirit. Presented with VIEWS OF A RETIRED NIGHT PORTER.
