Sarah Kaskas is a Lebanese/American filmmaker, music composer and film educator. She received her MFA in Cinematic Arts in 2011. Her thesis film, Fugue (2011), toured several festivals before being sold to BBC Arabic’s ‘Alternative Cinema’. In 2013, her animated short script Wanderland won an award at the Co-Production Forum at the Stuttgart International Animation Festival and was nominated for the Robert Bosch Film Prize in 2014. In 2016, Kaskas co-founded an independent production company called “Karaaj Films”. Under Karaaj, Kaskas co-directed Bread and Tea (2016), which won Best Short Documentary at Iran’s Cinéma Vérité. In 2018, Kaskas released Underdown, her first feature documentary, which had its world premiere at IDFA. The film is currently touring international festivals and has won the Special Jury Award at Malmö Arab Film Festival in 2019, the Grand Prix Award at the Mediteran Film Festival in 2020 and Best Documentary at Jerusalem Arab Film Festival in 2021. Kaskas currently resides in Beirut, developing her second feature and working as an Assistant Professor of Film at the Lebanese American University.
