Yang Yonghi (Japan)

A second-generation Korean Resident (or “Zainichi”) Yang was born and raised in Osaka, Japan. She graduated from Department of Literature of Korea University in Tokyo, and obtained an MA from the graduate school of New School University in New York.

Formerly a teacher, an actress, and a radio DJ, she began making mainly documentary productions as a filmmaker in 1995. Works including What is Chima- Chogori?, Yureru Kokoro (Swaying Heart), Camera wo Motta Komo (Komo who Carries Camera) were aired as TV programs on such stations as NHK. She was also active on TV Asahi’s News Station program, gathering news materials and making appearances.

She now films in various, mainly Asian, countries such as Thailand, Bangladesh and China – staying for a long periods of time and filming from a first-person perspective.

In 1997 Yang went to the U.S. and stayed in New York for approximately 6 years. During that time she filmed various ethnic communities, and obtained her MA in Media Studies at New School University Graduate School. She returned to Japan in 2003, where she continues creating movies in her “one-self document style.” She carries a camera, gathers materials, interviews people and structures a film all by herself.
