Born 1979 in Nagano Prefecture, Japan. Began producing his own films while a student at the Tokyo University of Agriculture. After graduating and entering the workforce, Sakai Ko entered the Graduate School of Film and New Media at the Tokyo University of the Arts in 2005.
His thesis film was Creep (2007). His other work includes Home Sweet Home (2006). With Ryusuke Hamaguchi, he made a three-part documentary about survivors of the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami, Voices from the Waves and being selected for the competition at the 2013 Yamagata International Documentary Film Festival, and Storytellers winning the Sky Perfect IDEHA Prize.
Since then, he has continued to collaborate with "Sendai Mediatheque" and "Miyagi Folktale Society" to record folktales that have been handed down in Miyagi prefecture, and is also involved in local video archive activities.
