Suranga Katugampala is an Italian–Sri Lankan filmmaker who explores hybrid visual languages between fiction and documentary.
After numerous short films, in 2017 he made his first feature film, For a Son, which won awards at several international festivals. Together with a group of collaborators, he founded Kaiya Collective, a collective dedicated to experimenting with cinematic practices that continuously question the contemporary meaning of image and sound. His research stems from an observation of reality inspired by Italian Neorealism and develops into a participatory, transdisciplinary practice in which genre reflection intertwines with an exploration of territories and identities.
His second feature film, Still Here (2025), is a portrait of a neighborhood on the eve of its demolition, overwhelmed by urban transformation. The film also gave rise to the editorial project Crazy Fish Sing, winner of the Italian Council 2024.
He currently teaches directing at the Mohole Film School in Milan, is producing his recent documentary End of Battle and developing his new feature film, Blue Prince, winner of the Best Project Award at Milano in Progress 2025.
