Anja Salomonowitz developed a film language for her films that combines documentary film, feature film and thesis. In the process, real human experiences are condensed through artistic alienation. Her films have received international acclaim, numerous film awards and have been included in relevant documentary film literature.
Anja Salomonowitz studied film in Vienna and Berlin, learned as an assistant to Ulrich Seidl and elsewhere. All her films ran on hundreds of film festivals worldwide and achieved there numerous filmawards. In 2013/14 she was the chairperson of dok.at, the Interessengemeinschaft Österreichischer Dokumentarfilm and 2016/17 chairwoman of the Verband Filmregie Österreich, the Austrian Directors Association. Anja Salomonowitz has three sons. She teaches artistic documentary film at universities (eg Aalto University Helsinki, Department of Film and Television, 2015 or University of Fine Arts Vienna, 2016) or at film festivals, (eg Documentary Academy in Jihlava, International Documentary Film Festival, 2018). At the Volkstheater Wien she staged the play The boy has to be circumcised, where children reflect the deliberations of adults on ritual circumcision unchanged. Anja Salomonowitz is constantly working to develop her film language and is currently shooting a poetic, hybrid documentary about the artist Daniel Spoerri.
