Born in Israel, Schirman grew up in various parts of the world, moving with his diplomat father. His academic background includes a short stint in Dartmouth College in New Hampshire, when his father was the Israeli consul general in Montreal. After doing his military service, he decided not to return to college. The Champagne Spy is his debut feature as writer and director. This film was the WINNER of the Israeli Academy Awards, Best Documentary 2007; it was nominated for the European Film Awards as Best Documentary 2007; it won the John Schlesinger Award as Outstanding First Feature, as well as the Jury Prize in the Doc Aviv International Film Festival and also won 4 Awards at Israeli the Documentary Forum. Schirman has since been hired by leading German producer Collina Films to write a fiction adaptation of The Champagne Spy documentary and of the novel by the same name.
