The author of the official spot of the 21st Ji.hlava IDFF was the award winning Icelanding composer and experimental filmmaker, Jóhann Jóhannsson who was among the festival's guests.
"I wanted to create a film using very basic means, a projector with no visual input, beaming light that is refracted and distorted with various reflective materials and filters. Similarly, I filmed an oscilloscope, an instrument that analyzes soundwaves, without the input of sound, so the visuals it produced were formed by its own internal rhythm.
The music was created in much the same way. The beat comes from a reverb and filter effects unit - a machine that normally require the input of an instrument to produce sound. Just like the oscilloscope, we used it without sending sound through it, and the sound we hear is the noise produced by its internal circuits filtered and the effect unit itself is producing the rhythm from its own internal feedback loop," said Jóhan Jóhannsson.
