Russian citizen and Soviet-born Ukrainian native Vitaly Mansky meanders through the Ukraine to explore the social effects of the Maidan Revolution. His journey encompasses his own large Ukrainian family. They live scattered all across the country: in Lviv, Odessa, the separatist area in Donbass, and Sevastopol on Crimea. The film looks for reasons behind the conflict where Ukrainian citizens, and sometimes friends and family, found themselves on different sides of the barricades.
The narrative also looks at ex-president Victor Yanukovych’s flight and current exile in Russia. The moment of the ex-president’s flight acts as a catalyst in the film to examine the historical ties between Ukraine and Russian. The film documents the two countries relationship that goes back centuries that manifest in the singularity of the Maidan Revolution.
