On the outskirts of Belo Horizonte, Brazil, favelas are given female names. The director Juliana Antunes and her almost entirely female crew settle in a neighbourhood called ‘Juliana’ to film two friends, Andreia and Leid. The pair are neighbours in this poor suburban slum, both trying to escape the daily dangers of a drug trafficking war happening as well as the adverse weather conditions. The film focuses on points of upheaval for the women: Andreia is about to leave Juliana and move to the neighbouring slum called ‘Baronesa’, while Leid is waiting for her husband to return from prison.
