What if there were a simple, cheap, solution to the battle against malaria? It sounds good, but not everyone likes it. Richard, an entomologist from the University of Nairobi, herbal practitioner Rehema, and the health volunteer organiser Gertrude believe that Africa can defeat parasites on its own.
Half a million people die from malaria annually, the majority in Sub-Saharan Africa. The economic losses are in the billions of dollars. Despite ongoing extensive research, there are still no effective weapons against mosquito-transmitted parasites. Insecticide-treated mosquito nets harm the environment, drugs are often not effective, and prevention is too costly. A modest plant, artemesia, might resolve things. Ugandan pharmacologist Patrick Ogwang gave a tea made from it to workers at a flower farm by Lake Victoria and reduced the number of the ill by 85%. But pharma companies would lose profits because of natural medicines.
