This book-to-film adaptation is regarded as one of director Jíři Menzel’s greatest works, talking home the prestigious Crystal Globe at the 1968 Karlovy Vary Film Festival. Though made during the springtime of the Czechoslovak New Wave, Capricious Summer is notable for its nostalgic, homely and fundamentally escapist style. The story is set in the fictitious river spa town of Krokovy Vary, where an owner of a small bathing house spends several days pseudo-philosophising in the company of his friends. The arrival of a tightrope walker and his assistant bring a degree of commotion to their lives and relationships.
