Best Local Documentary // Since the late 1960s the electric guitar has been adopted and transformed by musicians across Azerbaijan and the Caucasus. Inspired by traditional genres, such as the courtly mugham art-music, and the songs and tunes of bards, musicians have developed a unique sound, creating new techniques and styles of playing the guitar. Gitara traces the development of this musical subculture, following the lives of guitarists from the urban suburbs of Azerbaijan's capital Baku to the rural Azerbaijani minority villages in Georgia.
