Washington Parks & People is a nonprofit trying to reduce poverty and violence in Washington, D.C. neighbourhoods by improving parks. At the height of the recession, the organisation received a grant to help unemployed people find jobs and care for parks in their neighbourhoods. A seemingly simple goal — putting people back to work by planting trees — becomes complicated by local racial and community tensions, and limited time before money runs out. We’re offered a look into the inspiring but messy world of job training and the paradoxes facing urban communities.
