"Winner of Best Feature Documentary at our 2018 Festival, Dominioni captures the relationship between her teenage brother and their 97-year-old grandmother as they spend their days making amateur shoot-em-up telenovelas. Imbued with humour and playfulness, we were drawn to the film for its poetic sensibilities as it gently reminds us of what the act of creation can offer when the ordinary is met with wild imagination." - Selina Crammond
Unlike most teenagers, Juan’s idea of fun is creating soap-operas together with his frail 96-year-old grandmother, Rosa.
Juan is a 16-years-old with Asperger and an awful lot of melodramatic stories ready to be written and directed. Give him a camera and a few props and he will turn the living room into the set of “Juan the Slave”, a mini soap about a kid being abducted from his mother. Juan shares his directing ambitions with Rosa, his most important lead actress, co-editor, writer and partner in crime. As Juan’s sister, Mercedes Dominioni offers us an insider’s look on how filmmaking allows them to share new experiences despite the eight decades that separate them and how the fictions they set up can help quell the anxiety of growing up as well as that of aging. The Creator of Universes is an intimate family portrait and a tender reflection on intergenerational care.
