Jan Němec’s second film follows a group of friends, played by leading personalities of the Czechoslovak intellectual scene at the time, arriving to the birthday party of an influential man. Despite the sunny setting, the atmosphere seems off. Ominous undertones intensify when one of the guests stops feigning indifference, instead voicing his opinion and leaving. The authorities at the time interpreted this film as one containing an anti-socialist political message, and therefore banned its screenings in Czechoslovakia. However, the film’s absurdity resonated with foreign viewers and thus the film continued to be celebrated.
