“The place was deserted. I sat down on a bench and began to reflect….“, writes Bohumil Hrabal in his The Magic Flute, an essay that describes the mood in Prague in January 1989 when citizens protested the regime. Even in her first short films as a student, Angela Schanelec was interested in places and words. In this work which was shot as part of a seminar with Peter Nestler, she makes changes visible. Shot over one week in Prague on 16mm, three years after Hrabal’s accounts, the film lets his words reappear and puts it in a dialogue with streets and the presence of the city. (Viennale)
