A small town called Herzsprung in the northeast of Germany after reunification. Everything's in dissipation. Russian soldiers pull out, factories close, people lose their jobs. So does Johanna, a young woman who worked in a company kitchen. She meets a strange, dark-skinned man. Her own husband Jan has been thrown off the rails by unemployment, runs amok and dies. Her father connects with her older colleague Elsa, who does not want to be alone. Her friend Lisa fulfills her long-cherished dream. She hands Johanna over her hairdressing salon and heads south. Johanna falls in love with the stranger who works in a snack car on the motorway. A young unemployed person, Soljanka, who has formed a gang with his friends, is outraged. For a long time he has desired Johanna and now sets fire to the stranger's car, wants to stab him and kills the girl Johanna, who stands protecting herself from her lover.
