While many people think of flowers as purely decorative and even excessive, the author of this film sees many reasons for considering the world of flowers to be a powerful source for reflection on nature, plants and their commodification in the modern world. During their life cycle flowers go through numerous tribulations, as they serve as objects of admiration and pride, create jobs and even become food. Genetic modifications, multimillion science experiments, transcontinental auctions – all of these have become a part of the modern history of flowers that evolved for centuries alongside human culture and made them a crucial part of the plant economy . The present film is a documentary essay that takes us on a compelling journey to discover a way of seeing relationships of humans and plants through the stories of flowers. The director looks for answers in the most contradictory of places: from an international flower auction to rural pagan festivity in a remote Spanish village. Along the way she meets a master of Ikebana art, a romantic billionaire and a mysterious enchanted wanderer among many others. ‘Blue Rose’ reminds us that such seemingly ephemeral objects as flowers, might give a lesson about the world we live in no less important than their screaming counterparts.
