The Soviet terror left an indelible mark on the face of today’s Kazakhstan. Over a million Kazakhs died as a result of the famine it caused, and millions more were deported to the inhospitable steppes from all over the former Soviet Union. Hundreds of Czechs and Czechoslovak citizens also fell victims to the repressions. The remains of the Gulag camps are still preserved in the magical Kazakh landscape and in the memory of the local population. The Gulag.cz expedition set out to map their footprints, resulting in this chilling testimony to a dark era in Soviet history, framed by an adventurous journey across a harsh winter landscape.
