The documentary Buried Hopes brings to light the fate of hundreds of Czechoslovaks who set out for the Kyrgyz steppes in 1925 to establish a community, but had to face disease and Stalinist terror. Almost a century later, an expedition from the organization Gulag.cz follows in their footsteps, intending to explore the foothills of the Tian Shan and map the places where their compatriots lived. They find the gruesome remains of uranium mines and labor camps. The result of the expedition is a documentary that maps the search for traces of terror as well as encounters and conversations with the Czechs’ descendants, witnesses, and local experts on the backdrop of Kyrgyz towns and exotic landscape.
