Vuelve Sebastiana (1953), a 28 minute colour documentary on the Chipaya of the Bolivian highlands, is one of the most memorable ethnographic films produced in the last century. In 1992 at the Film Festival on Nantes in France, Ruiz’s Vuelve Sebastiana was recognized as the first indigenous film made in Latin America, and Ruiz was declared the “father of indigenous Andean cinema.”

In 2004, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Film Archive, in collaboration with the Los Angeles Latino International Film Festival and the Film and Electronic Arts Department of California State University, Long Beach created a new 35mm print with English subtitles.
