For her self-declared “final film” — she would make two more — Varda returned to the beaches that have played some of the most important roles in her life. Varda, the most exuberant and generous filmmaker of her generation, invents a kind of expansive cine-self-portrait for the purpose. Towards the end of her life, as in the beginning, she was among the freest of all filmmakers. We salute her for it.
