Four weeks. This is how long the Tunisian people took to overthrow the dictator Ben Ali and make way for the greatest geopolitical upheaval of the beginning of the 21st century.

Nevertheless, the Tunisian revolution, as unexpected and dazzling it may have appeared to the world, is part of a much bigger story. A story that extends from the first revolts in the Gafsa mining region in January 2008, to the first free elections in October 2011.

In two chapters and 12 months of investigation, Democracy Year Zero becomes the eyewitness to this major event in its entirety, through the eyes of the main opponents and revolutionaries.

Director Christophe Cotteret says “Amira and I met for the first time in Tunis at the end of 2010. Two months later, Ben Ali was overthrown from power, which started what we would perceive as a laboratory of democracy in Tunisia, unprecedent in the Arab world. The film Democracy Year Zero was born. Looking back on these events, we wanted to understand and illustrate, what was it that managed to transform the sporadic social revolts into a true revolution. And when we extended our vision to the heart of the transition to democracy, we discovered the evidence of a new Tunisia approaching.”
