Forcados are a major part of the Portuguese bullfight. They appeared in Portugal with the prohibition of bull slaughtering in the arena in the 19th century. They derive from the groups of men with pitchforks who would defend the staircase to the King’s box. As of 1837 they would also take the bull and hold it still following the horsemen bullfight.
