The director, currently at risk for developing gestational diabetes, is forced to stop eating refined sugar immediately. Suffering from withdrawal symptoms, she realises how difficult it is to get rid of this addictive substance and how hard it is to find foods that don’t contain sugar. The director conducts an investigative report on the effects of centuries of sugar consumption on individuals and society. She discovers what huge power this grainy material has had, both in the past and today. The film skirts the edges of historical thriller, scientific observation, and a socially engaged film.
